UK defence chief: more than 500,000 Russian troops killed in Ukraine; 1.5 million casualties
Air Chief Marshal Sir Richard Knighton, chief of the U.K. Defence Staff, said Friday that more than half a million Russian troops have been killed since Moscow's full-scale invasion began in February 2022, part of about 1.5 million total Russian casualties. British defence intelligence confirmed the 500,000 killed figure among Ukrainian General Staff tallies published midweek; Knighton said 1.4 million of the casualties came since January 2023 for about 2% of Ukrainian territory. He also cited more than 10,000 armored vehicles, nearly 3,000 air-defense and artillery systems, and over 370 aircraft and helicopters lost. There was no immediate comment from Russian officials. Neither Moscow nor Kyiv publishes regular battlefield death totals.
