U.S. marks 25 years since Sept. 11 attacks; Trump speaks at Pentagon
The United States observes the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks that killed about 2,977 people at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and in Shanksville, Pa. President Donald Trump is scheduled to speak at the Pentagon ceremony (~9 a.m. EDT); Vice President JD Vance attends the Ground Zero / National September 11 Memorial ceremony in New York; other administration officials are at the Flight 93 National Memorial. New York’s ceremony adds a seventh moment of silence for people who died later from toxic-dust illnesses — federal monitoring programs have cited 9,400-plus illness-linked deaths in some reporting. Friday is also Patriot Day and a National Day of Service and Remembrance; politicians have generally been barred from speaking at the NYC Ground Zero ceremony since about 2012.
